TARTS IN BELEM

Anna and I took the tram to Belem during our visit to Lisbon.
We couldn't resist the custard tarts from the bakery that stakes claim to their invention.
The Cathedral and Monastery of St Jerome was absolutely fabulous too. The natural light illuminating the interior kept me entertained for hours. Also said a few prayers too.
Then it was off to the UNESCO listed Torre de Belem which was built as a fortress but also used as a prison.
On the way we stopped off at the Padrao dos Descobrimentos, a monument celebrating the Portugese explorers such as Vasco De Gama who set sail from the same shore.
On the ground in front of the monument, there is a massive and very beautiful mosaic depicting the routes of Portugese mariners. I was very excited to see the top of Australia!
